MGA Thermal’s mission is to enable the shift to renewable energy by providing clean, economic, and scalable storage of energy.
Our novel system of thermal storage materials, Miscibility Gap Alloys (MGA), are capable of storing a huge amount of energy as heat. Blocks of MGA are incorporated into modular storage tanks, which can provide energy to a range of applications such as improving the electrical grid’s stability, residential and commercial space heating, industrial process/waste heat, and even electric vehicles. However, our primary focus is enabling intermittent renewable energy sources, such as the sun and wind, to provide base load electricity to the grid.
Our patented technology uses the large amount of heat captured in melting and freezing processes to store thermal energy over a narrow temperature range. This form of energy storage is known as latent heat thermal storage (LHTS).
MGA systems can be custom made to suit a wide range of operating temperatures, we have multiple systems under development between 200 oC and 1400 oC. Operating over a narrow temperature band allows the energy to be used in a more useful manner. Additionally, the possibility of storing energy at very high temperatures opens the door to next generation, high efficiency, power cycles.
